Create a hierarchy (parent/child relationship) within the same object.

  • Data Type = Lookup Relationship.
  • Related to = select the Object you want to create the hierarchy in.
  • Field Label = Parent, i.e. ParentOpportunity.
  • Related List Label = Sub.
  • Save.

Say you have a situation where it is required you have many of one record related to many of another. Duplicating that lookup field a number of times on each object is not best practice and will get very messy. This is where we should leverage Junction Objects.

Step 1

To create a Role Hierarchy, we go to the link path Setup Home → Users → Roles → Setup Roles. The default role hierarchy appears as shown below.

In the next step, we add a role to the existing hierarchy by filling in the role details. Click on Add Role. The next window appears asking for the following details.
