About Salesforce and Donation Processing

Salesforce is the world-leading CRM solution for a number of reasons, chief among them being the platform’s high level of customization. Organizations, nonprofit and for-profit alike, are able to customize their solutions to include the exact tools and functions that are necessary to effectively run their unique operations.

Payment Processing Overview

From the perspective of the consumer, when you shop online or make a donation to a worthy organization, you typically enter a long string of numbers from your credit card into an online page. Then, the money is magically taken from your account and you receive a confirmation email that verifies the payment was accepted.

Donation & Payment Processing for the Salesforce Nonprofit Cloud

When you invest in donation forms and fundraising systems, you’ll have access to the payment processors they use to translate online transactions into funds in your account.

Processing Fees

The fees associated with payment processing may be include flat rate transaction fees, percentage-based processing fees, and platform fees. You may have a blend of these types depending on if you’re offering credit, debit, or ACH payment options for your donors.

Security

When you have an integrated donation system that shares donor data with your Salesforce CRM, another concern that should be top-of-mind is how that data is kept safe, especially payment information. Before investing in a donation system, be sure to ask if credit card information is stored, how it’s secured, and who can access that information.

Information Collected During Salesforce Donation Processing

A donation system that’s completely integrated with your Salesforce CRM allows you to collect information about your supporters during the payment process. When a supporter initially fills out the donation form on your website, you should have the option to add customized questions to gather key information about that supporter.

Type of Information Collected

When a supporter donates to your organization through a Salesforce-integrated donation page, your donation management system should automatically create (or update) the profile for that donor. Some of the information stored in that profile can include (but is not limited to) the following:

Should a non profit organization give a soft credit to a donor?

The non-profit organization should hard credit the third-party organization and give a full soft credit to the donor. This is the appropriate way of handling this scenario because the donation received by the non-profit organization was legally made by the fiscal agent, not the advising donor.

Can a nonprofit give soft credit?

A non-profit organization might need to give a soft credit to an organization (Plative) that uses a bank or external firm (Fidelity Charitable) to manage its corporate philanthropy. Let’s say that Plative wants to give a $10,000 grant to a non-profit organization from its donor-advised account.

Should a non profit organization hard credit a $2,000 donation?

Given that ADP is the one who wrote the check, the non-profit organization should hard credit the $2,000 dollars donation on the ADP account record. In addition, the non-profit organization should add partial soft credits to both employees who had $500 dollars deducted from their paychecks.

Does Fidelity give a check to a non profit?

Fidelity Charitable sends a check to the non-profit organization. Even though the actual funds are coming from Plative, the check is written by Fidelity Charitable, so the non-profit organization should hard credit Fidelity Charitable and give full soft credit to Plative.

1. Everything in One Place

Information ‘collection and cleansing’ should be your first step; ahead of any fundraising campaign, you should ensure all information is in one place.

2. Building Relationships and Prospects

Nonprofits frequently approach donors for repeat donations. Relationships will help you build a Leadership Team, which I will discuss further in Section 4. This Leadership Team can be composed of supporters, volunteers, directors, and employees, and will work together to conduct outreach.

3. Outreach

You send out emails, you send out marketing materials, and you can have a website. All of these activities (and data) should work together to help you achieve your goals and move your campaigns forward.

4. Leadership Team

Your Leadership Team is composed of the people who care about your organization. This team may include individuals who are your employees, outside supporters, or volunteers – anyone you are able to incorporate into the Campaign.

5. Stewardship

In order to get more donations, you need to have a process that encourages fostering long-term relationships and repeat donations – this requires stewardship. Your organization needs to maintain the relationship with your donors, otherwise, you may find that after you get one donation, the donor leaves.

Summary

I hope you found this walkthrough helpful. I truly believe that anyone can fundraise, given the correct tools. It is so important for nonprofits to have access to these tools – in order to build capacity and serve your communities better, you need money. For many nonprofits, fundraising is viewed as burdensome or aspirational.
