NPSP Has What You Need!
So we just learned that NPSP has some powerful out-of-the-box reporting functionality.
On Not Reinventing the Wheel
When Anthony needs to answer some questions using data, his instinct is to first look for existing reports before doing anything else—and that’s a wise move. As we learned earlier, Nonprofit Success Pack (NPSP) comes with more than 60 fundraising and constituent reports.
Report Components
These are the building blocks of all reports so it’s critical to understand how they shape your data before you get to the business of creating reports.
Create a New Table Report (Tabular Report)
The grocery stores that partner with NMH have recently gone above and beyond their standard donations and have contributed additional resources to the food pantry during a period of unexpected need, and Anthony wants to send personal thank-you notes for their support.
Create a New Report Grouped by Rows and Columns (Matrix Report)
Anthony knows his way around reports so well now that he already knows he can find this data for Gordon. He’s going to create a new report grouped by rows and columns (a matrix report), because it’s the best report type for an overview of a data set, just like the one Gordon needs.
Prepare to Import Standard and Custom Fields
Let’s start with the fields that No More Homelessness (NMH) would like to import to contact records: email opt-out and preferred language.
Create the Custom Field on the Contact Object
First, let’s create the new custom preferred-language field. But before we dive into creating the new field itself, let’s create a new global picklist value set.
Create Corresponding Fields on the NPSP Data Import Object
Now that both the preferred language and email opt-out fields exist on the contact object, we need to create corresponding fields (your staging fields) on the NPSP Data Import object. You’ll have to create these fields for both the NPSP Data Import object’s Contact 1 and Contact 2 if you want to import these fields for both members of a household.
Map the New Fields
After clicking Configure Advanced Mapping, you’ll see a list of Object Groups, which are collections of field mappings that tell NPSP Data Importer what objects (contacts, accounts, etc.) to create or update. There are already object groups for Contact 1 and Contact 2. We’ll edit those now.
Get Ready to Prepare the Data
With the target and staging fields set up and mappings in place, we have everything we need in Salesforce to start importing our data.
Verify Step
You’ll be completing this project in your own hands-on org. Click Launch to get started, or click the name of your org to choose a different one.
Relationships Overview

NPSP Relationship Settings
To navigate to relationships settings for NPSP, click NPSP Settings in the navigation bar, or find and select it through the App Launcher ( ), click Relationships, then click Relationships from within the expanded menu to see all the settings.
The Reciprocal Relationships List in Action
If you choose List Settings for the Reciprocal Method (the default), then the reciprocal relationships list determines reciprocal relationships.
Add a New Reciprocal Relationship
The Development department at NMH requests a way to track the deceased spouse of a donor on the contact record in NPSP, a common need for many nonprofits. Gorav Patel, the Salesforce Admin at our (fictional) nonprofit NMH, gets to work creating the reciprocal relationship his team needs. Let’s follow along.
Add a New Auto-Created Relationship
Auto-created relationships allow a custom contact lookup field on the contact or campaign member objects to automatically trigger the creation of a new relationship type of your choice. Use the relationships autocreation setting to automatically establish a new relationship between these two contacts.
Donations and No More Homelessness
Nonprofit Success Pack (NPSP) helps fundraisers operate more effectively, and that’s something all of the teams — development, program management, and communications and advocacy — at our fictional nonprofit, No More Homelessness (NMH), can appreciate.
Donation Management with NPSP
Remember, in Salesforce, we track all donations and grant information using the standard Salesforce object called an opportunity — for a quick review of how Salesforce objects are used in NPSP, check out the Constituent Data Management with Nonprofit Success Pack module on Trailhead.
Add a Donation From an Individual
Now that we've had an introduction to those key terms, let's get back to basics and enter a donation. Sofia created contact records for all of the new donors on this batch of checks. Now she's ready to enter the gifts they made. There are two ways to enter a donation in NPSP.
Add a Donation From a Company or Other Institution
Creating a donation from a company or other entity is almost identical to creating a donation from an individual. Let’s follow along as Sofia creates a donation from Cloud Kicks:
Opportunity Rollups
Opportunity rollups display information from related records, including aggregate totals. In other words, rollup fields allow information from one record to automatically “roll up” and appear on another related record.
Set up an Email Signature
You may have already found this, with all your adventuring around the menu, but in case you haven’t, you can add an email signature in the Settings options.
Adjust Activity Reminders
Think waaaaaay back to when we first showed Michael’s Home page (or just click over to the Home tab in NPSP to see your own). When there’s something new that needs your attention, you’ll know because a little red bubble appears on the bell icon. (Think of it like a visual ringing.) The number on the circle indicates how many new items you have.
Putting a Face to a Name
Now, the most important personalization: Changing your profile. To add a picture and personal description:
Organize the Navigation Bar
This next customization doesn’t happen within your Settings, but it’s in the same neighborhood. The navigation bar is a series of tabs at the top of the page, just below your profile icon. Each tab is a shortcut to that item. To make life easier (and to work faster), you can customize which objects appear as tabs in the navigation bar.
Quiz
1 When you set up an email signature in Salesforce, where does it appear?
Map Opportunity Fields to Payment Fields
Use Payment Mappings to automatically copy values from Opportunity record fields to Payments, whenever you create a new Payment. You may want to do this so that details from the Opportunity record also appear in the Payment record for easy reference or billing.
Create Missing Payments
If you disable and re-enable Payments, some of your Opportunities may be missing Payment records. You can run a batch process to create the Payment records. For more information, see Create Missing Payments.
