Start by breaking down your move into 3 stages: Discover, Rollout and Optimize. Then, use the Transition Assistant (TA) as your guide throughout the move. The TA provides step-by-step instructions, tools, and resources and can be found in setup, in the left-hand navigation.

Can you move data from one Salesforce environment to another?

For metadata releases, such as new fields, page layouts & process builders, Salesforce has Change Sets built in to move these components. What Salesforce doesn’t have is a built-in way to quickly and easily move data, particularly reference data between environments.

What is a Salesforce release?

A Salesforce Release is how Salesforce delivers new features and functionality to our customers. They occur three times per year (Spring, Summer, Winter timed with the northern hemisphere seasons), and new features are often based on input from the Trailblazer Community via a prioritization process.

What is the difference between Salesforce and Salesforce change sets?

While these concepts are the same, the execution differs slightly. For metadata releases, such as new fields, page layouts & process builders, Salesforce has Change Sets built in to move these components. What Salesforce doesn’t have is a built-in way to quickly and easily move data, particularly reference data between environments.

How do upgrades work in Salesforce?

Upgrades happen automatically on specific dates that are published up to a year in advance on the Salesforce Trust website. The first set of upgrades happens on sandbox instances 4-6 weeks before a release goes into production. To be ready for future releases, review the maintenance schedule.

What is Release Management?

Release management is a continuous process that has specific stages which should be followed for a successful release each and every time. Each step is important to ensure a stable release of new features, and each should be fully completed before moving onto the next stage. Today we’ll focus on two very important stages: Test and Release.

Why Salesforce Release Management is Challenging

The release management process applies to both metadata and reference data deployments. While these concepts are the same, the execution differs slightly. For metadata releases, such as new fields, page layouts & process builders, Salesforce has Change Sets built in to move these components.

How to Improve Salesforce Release Management

Planning your releases is the cornerstone of Release Management – and agile development overall. This is a crucial step to get right whether you are deploying a simple Process Builder, or a tricky Salesforce CPQ Product Rule.

Summary

Release management is critical to master to ensure your Salesforce environment is always functioning in tip-top shape.

How to transition to Lightning?

Can you talk about new releases without talking about Lightning Experience?

We can’t talk about new releases without talking about Lightning Experience, which is where all the innovation happens. If you are already using Lightning Experience, you are all set to make full use of new Lightning Experience-only features.

What is rollback deployment?

The Roll Back Deployment dialog uses time series snapshot data to restore the destination org to an earlier date. Any one of the earlier snapshots can be selected as the source. The destination org can be refreshed and continually compared to the source until everything has been restored.

How many snapshot reports are there?

Snapshot has two dozen reports that are hugely beneficial for corporate governance and security. All of these capabilities can be scheduled and automated. These reports will be the subject of a separate white paper, but here they are listed, below:

Can you browse for a job list?

You can browse for any Job List or Package.xml file and automatically select those assets. Often a developer working on a project will send a file along to call out the assets that need to be migrated. The same Job List can be imported into the “Deploy Metadata” dialog to move the same assets later on.

Can release manager use the same command line interface as developer?

The release manager can use the same command line interface that their developer uses to clone the project. The command line can be tested from the Update Project dialog. When you update a developer project, the files are downloaded from the repository (if any) and then harvested just like a regular snapshot.

Can metadata be moved into a sandbox?

Metadata assets can be moved into a partial or full Sandbox, and after quality assurance and user acceptance testing, deployed into a production org. As part of the migration process, Snapshot provides two dozen security and compliance reports that help you analyze metadata structure, data usage, and account security.
