When you assign a Task to another user, they will receive an email alerting them that they have a new Task. Finally, once a New Task is created it has a Status. The default setting is Not Started, but the other options, set by Salesforce, but completely customizable are – In Progress, Completed, Waiting on Someone Else and Deferred.

In Salesforce Classic, we can send an email notification when someone creates or assigns a task, depending on your organization's settings. In Lightning Experience, there aren't options to send an email when you assign a task or receive an email when you receive a task.
