Actors Involved In Agile Salesforce Development Lifecycle

A typical Salesforce Development Lifecycle involves multiple actors. Many of them are specialist of one role and some have expertise in another. For example many project managers also work as release managers and many Developers also have expertise as trainers. But for the sake of this post I am going to define all actors.

The Development Environment

Salesforce development environment known as Force.com IDE is a complete integrated Salesforce development setup that is fully equipped to develop Force.com apps having Apex, Visualforce, and metadata components. It is built using Eclipse as base and thus can be even integrated with it through a plugin.

SFDC Lifecycle Step 1: Source Control Setup

Setting up the source control repository is usually the role of Release Manager. A good practice is to create separate GIT repository for every project with default branch of the repository acting as the Master branch. You will store all your production metadata in the Master branch.

SFDC Lifecycle Step 2: Coding Beings

Development begins by the developers creating their separate sandboxes. These sandboxes usually contains a copy of main production app and all the associated Salesforce configuration information. As said earlier each developer has to clone their branch.

SFDC Lifecycle Step 3: Testing

Testing of features by a QA expert is performed nearly like the development part. The QA creates their own sandbox, migrate the code from repository to sandbox and then test run the app.

SFDC Lifecycle Step 4: User Acceptance Testing and Training

After the app passes all tests in the previous test phase, it is now ready for testing by development team, product manager and other interested parties.

SFDC Lifecycle Step 5: Final Release to Production

After all testing processes, the app is tested for performance. This testing is done in what is called an intermediate sandbox environment. This sandbox has all the production environment’s configurations and data. This is not a partial sandbox. It has all the features of the app.
